FELLING OF TREES IN SOUTH DELHI STAYED: DELHI HIGH COURT: JUNE 25, 2018

July 04, 2018

The Hon’ble High Court of Delhi in the matter titled “Dr Kaushal Kant Mishra Vs. Union Of India & Ors” bearing W.P.(C) 6680 of 2018, stayed the move of NBCC’s plan which involved complete clear-ance of almost 20,000 trees for a housing development project in the areas of Sarojini Nagar, Naoroji Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Thyagaraja Nagar, Mohammadpur and Kasturba Nagar.
A Writ Petition was filed seeking appropriate directions from the Hon’ble Court to quash the decisions of allowing the large-scale destruction of the vegetation and tree cover of New Delhi for the purposes of Government redevelopment, wholly ignoring the air pollution and serious environmental concerns that affect the health of the citizens of the capital.
However, the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi passed an Order dated 25.06.2018 wherein it has been stated “to put a Bar till the next date of hearing, no tree in the concerned area shall be brought down or cut”.
